Sandwiched between the heavily boycotted Olympic Games of 1980 and 1984, the World Athletics Championship was conceived to provide a tournament that really did decide the world’s best. The inaugural event was a resounding success, with Carl Lewis claiming a 100m triple crown and a 4x100m relay victory, Stefka Kostadinova winning five gold medals in the high jump and Sergey Bubka lowering the men’s pole vault record to an incredible 8.92 metres.
The 2023 edition saw Noah Lyles win the men’s 100m/200m double and Faith Kipyegon clinching both the 1500m and 5000m titles. Elsewhere, heptathlete Nafi Thiam successfully defended her title, while 400m hurdler Siobhan-Marie McLaughlin-Levrone won the first ever women’s 400m hurdles world title and reduced the world record to two tenths of a second.
New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish blew away the field to win the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Race favourite Soufine El Bakkali pushed Beamish all the way but the Kiwi found an extra gear over the final lap to take a slender lead.
