The World Series has been a staple in Major League Baseball since 1905, and with the exception of a few years impacted by war, labor strife, or both, it has been one of baseball’s most celebrated events. The series features some of the best teams and players in the game, and its highlight games have been known for nail-biting turns of events and thrilling finishes.
The Series has featured many milestone moments, such as the Boston Red Sox ending their 86-year drought and the Chicago White Sox breaking an even longer curse with their 2004 sweep. In addition, it has seen a number of talented ballplayers from the Latin America, Caribbean and Pacific Rim make their way to North America’s high-salary major leagues, giving the World Series an international flavor.
One of the more memorable moments came in a dramatic Game 5 of the 2018 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. After New York took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, it looked like the Dodgers would be done for. But they staged a comeback led by a hero named Anthony Volpe and a player that hasn’t been in the majors long: Shohei Ohtani.
This year’s World Series also saw a dramatic finish as the Los Angeles Dodgers swept the New York Yankees to win their first championship since 2020. The series featured a pair of Game 1 walk-off heroes — Kirk Gibson with his 1988 homer and Blake Treinen this time around — and a dramatic Game 4 that saw the Yankees erase a two-run deficit against a Dodgers team led by fireballing setup man Michael Kopech, deathly lefty Ryan Brasier, and a battery featuring catcher Gavin Lux and second baseman Alex Verdugo.
